It’s Not the Taco: The Small Things That Add Up (and No One Talks About)

May 05, 2026

When it feels like nothing is working

You can be doing “pretty good”… and still feel like something isn’t working.

You’re making better choices. You’re more aware. You’re trying. But the scale isn’t moving…or maybe you just don’t feel the progress you expected.

It’s frustrating. And honestly, a little confusing. Because it doesn’t feel like you’re doing anything wrong.

It started with taco night

With Cinco de Mayo here today, let’s talk about something simple.

Taco night.

It’s quick. It’s easy. It feels like a good, balanced option. Protein, toppings, maybe you’ve even made a few swaps along the way. You grab the ground meat, start cooking… and then reach for the seasoning packet.

Tear. Pour. Stir.

Done.

This caught me off guard

Here’s the part most people don’t realize: Many of those seasoning packets contain added sugar.

I actually learned this the hard way.

One night, I made taco meat for my husband and served it over a bed of lettuce. In my mind, this was a “better” option—no shell, lots of protein, simple and clean.

And then we saw his blood sugar spike on his glucose monitor. We were both surprised. Because nothing about that meal looked like it should cause that kind of response.

So we took a closer look at the ingredients.

And there it was… sugar. Right in the seasoning packet. Not something you’d expect.
Not something most people are looking for. But it was there.

It's not just the taco

And it’s not just taco seasoning. It’s sauces. Dressings. Marinades. All the little “helpers” that make things taste better and save time.

Individually, they don’t seem like a big deal. And that’s exactly why they’re easy to overlook.

The real reason things stall

Because it’s not the taco. It’s the pattern. It’s the collection of small, unnoticed choices that quietly stack up over time.

A little sugar here. A little extra there. A few autopilot moments throughout the day.

None of them feel significant on their own. But together? They can absolutely impact your progress.

The trap many people fall into

Most people think they need to find the one big thing that’s holding them back. But more often than not, it’s not one big thing. It’s the quiet, consistent patterns. The ones that don’t feel important enough to question. The ones that feel normal.

And this is where it gets tricky. Because if something feels small, we tend to dismiss it.

“It’s just a little.”
“It’s not that often.”
“This can’t be the reason.”

But when those “little things” happen regularly, they stop being little. They become part of the environment you’re operating in every day.

A simple shift that changes everything

This isn’t about perfection.

And it’s definitely not about cutting out everything you enjoy.

You don’t need to eliminate taco night. You don’t need to overcomplicate your meals. You just need to start noticing what’s been going unnoticed.

Let's go back to the taco

What could this look like with just a little more awareness?

Instead of the packet, you could make your own simple blend with chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt and pepper. Same flavor profile. No added fillers or hidden sugars.

You still get the ease…you’re just a little more in control of what’s going in.

You still have options

And if you want to take it one step further, you have options there too. You can keep a shell if that works for you. Or you can switch it up:

  • lettuce wraps
  • tacos over a bed of lettuce
  • a taco bowl instead of a traditional build

Same meal. Same enjoyment. Just a slightly different setup.

None of this is about doing everything “right.” It’s about becoming more intentional. Because once you see these patterns, you can start to adjust them in a way that actually feels doable. Not overwhelming. Not all at once.

Start smaller than you think

If you’re feeling stuck, this is one of the first places to look.

Not at the big, dramatic changes…but at the small things you’ve been doing on repeat without thinking twice about them.

So here’s something simple to try this week: Don’t overhaul everything. Just notice one thing.

One ingredient.
One habit.
One moment where you would normally run on autopilot…

And pause long enough to make a choice instead.

Where real progress begins

Because real progress doesn’t come from doing everything perfectly. It comes from noticing what matters…and making small shifts that you can actually sustain.

That’s how things start to change.

Not all at once. But in a way that lasts.
